CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulation to Lewis Smith and Molly Kemery who each win a £50 County Academy Coaching Award.

Each year we ask the CAP coaches to nominate a player in their squad to receive an award and this year we have two winners - here's what they said about them:

LEWIS SMITH has shown great enthusiasm throughout the whole year.  Attended every session and given 100% all the time.  He also reports back to me with his scores from competitions as well as how his practice is going.  He has really taken well to this years program and has been a pleasure to work with as have all of the lads but he's just shown that little bit extra and applied himself diligently.

MOLLY KEMERY has come on leaps and bounds, has the best attendance and we have nearly started to get her competitiveness out of her.

Well done both of you!!

2017 ACADEMY CHALLENGE - SHIREHAMPTON PARK GC - SUNDAY 17TH SEPTEMBER

With possibly the largest entry for this event is was more a challenge for the organisers than the players.  The Gloucestershire Girls joined in the event playing their own stableford and card marking competition at the same time.

The weather was fantastic and the course in superb condition.  26 boys and girls with Congu handicaps played 18 holes with 19 club handicap players following on playing 9.  4 non-handicap players also played of the new Academy forward tees.

Our very grateful thanks go to Shirehampton Park GC for letting us play on their lovely course and for keeping us all feed and watered. To Janice Saunders and Debbie Casling for the cup cakes and to Tom Gillespie our Academy Head Coach for keeping flow around the course.

2017 ACADEMY Vs COUNTY U14'S

On what turned out to be a glorious spring day in the Cotswolds our annual match took  place against  the County U14’s at Cirencester Golf Club

With a friendly atmosphere abounding 7 matches of betterball matchplay were finalised going out in handicap order with players receiving 90% allowance from the lowest player

Straight away very few nerves being shown and attacking play coming from both sides in a great spirit. By the halfway point all but 2 matches were evenly balanced with only a hole or two separating and a plethora of pars, birdies and meters of holed putts

The first 2 matches went well for the Academy taking both on the 17th green before the County boys came back with 2 resounding wins of their own further back. With Match 6 going to County on the 15th and Match 7 to the Academy on the 17th its was down to Match 4 as the decider

A tough fought 17th meant the Academy were one down with one to play so needed something special on 18. All 4 players held their nerve on the tricky Par 3 meaning a halved hole and a deciding point for the county

The level of sportsmanship as well as the golf was evident afterwards as the players mixed for a little food and closing words from the most senior players. What’s even more encouraging is that every player from the County has come through the Academy and are now pushing for Jeff Hall and higher events giving our current squad a great goal to aim for

Thanks again to Richard Collishaw and all the staff at Cirencester for making us so welcome and presenting the course in such great condition as well as to Ian James for brining such a strong squad from the County

FITNESS AND NUTRITION IS A VITAL PART OF OUR TRAINING PROGRAM

County Academy Boys' Assessment Days North & South 2014

From County Academy Head Coach Steve Scott-Bowen

On 20th and 21st of September we held the now annual assessment days for the boys' squads in the South and North of our County. We would like to thank Tracy Park and Sherdons for hosting the events on a stunning Autumnal weekend.

Thirty-five players attended the nine-hole event in the South and fifteen in the North, 14 of whom were new to the programme and loved the experience. Boys from various Development and Futures squads played a stroke-play medal under the watchful eyes of their respective CAP coaches Stuart Archibald, James Tuck, Richard King, Jonathan Skuse, Tom Gillespie and myself, Steve Scott-Bowen. We would like to thank Kirsty Taylor and Sarah Billington-Kelly for volunteering to support the event in the North.

The ethos of this event is to combine a session that enables new players to attend and be assessed by our expert team of coaches while simultaneously allowing us to evaluate the players we have coached in the programme throughout the year.

After watching the players play nine-holes the coaches had some one-on-one time with their squads to offer feedback and collect each player’s end of year assessment forms as well as our new drills and skills spread sheets which all players are asked to carry out to monitor their development.

The progress we have witnessed this year has been incredible. Many players have surpassed their goals and most of the players handicaps have plummeted. The feedback from players and parents has been fantastic and we are proud to see a clear increase in talent and performance of our County academy talent pool in 2014.

Both boys and girls' squads for the 2014/15 Academy will be announced approximately 21st October

 How the Academy Works

The Gloucestershire County Golf Partnership has been running a successful County Academy Programme (CAP) for the last 5 years and many of its players have now progressed and are playing in our County Teams.

The CAP programme runs closely alongside the County structure of coaching and on occasions its players are invited to attend County events and play in their teams.

There are two strands to our CAP – the first is our ‘Future Squads’ these are for players just outside the County criteria and we work closely with them to prepare them for possible County inclusion.  The second is our Academy Squads – these squads are for players who are looking to move into our Futures Squads when the time is ready.
