Gloucestershire County Golf Partnership Club Team Championship

The Kendleshire Golf Club take the trophy for the second year- but only just!

After the torrential rain all week fingers and toes were crossed for the Club Team Championships being held at Cleeve Hill Golf Club on Sunday 23rd June - but the weather held and all 12 teams got round the course in relative dry.

Competition was intense with several countbacks through the field but The Kendleshire GC team just pipped second place Broadway GC into first place.

Team player Sue said she could not believe that she was back at Cleeve Hill again to defend the title having won through her club qualifying round.  The team were looking forward to playing the course which was in amazing condition and the food afterwards was delightful.  They were all looking forward to competing at Woodhall Spa and hoped to improve on their score last year.

The team of Sue Johns, Karen Bowers, Marc Coombs and Paul Jenkins will now go onto the National Finals being held at Woodhall Spa on Friday 16th August - we wish them well.

The sun shone for our event this year which showed the course in its true colours with spectacular views across the valleys.

The event has become a regular in the Gloucestershire calendar taking over from the Racecourse Challenge previously held on the Cheltenham Racecourse Gold Cup Track.  A magnificent trophy is played for each year as well as automatic entry into the England Golf Trust Club Team Championships at Frilford Heath in August.

Eight teams played this year with some who had not played the course before.  Following the game they were all treated to a superb roast dinner.  Our thanks as always go to Cleeve Cloud for hosting this event for us and looking after us all.

The winners for 2018 were The Kendleshire Team of Sue Johns, Marc Coombs, Karen Bowers and Philip Bowers with 85 points just pipping the Gloucester team of Shiela Winstone, Darren Smith, Sally Hawkins and Sean Dunne by 1 point.

The 2017 Gloucestershire County Golf Partnership Club Team Championship took place last weekend - Sunday 25th June - at Cleeve Cloud Golf Club in testing conditions.

'It was a little windy up on the hill but the views were spectacular' commented one player.  With the promise of a Sunday roast on their return 9 teams took to the hills.  However, whilst they were out at play a power cut took place in the clubhouse and surrounding houses.  Undeterred by the inconvenience the kitchen staff under leadership from Margaret put on a splendid array of salads for the players instead and saved the day.

The home team of Hugh Fitzsimons, Rita New, Trevor Martin and Barbara Smyth took the honors with 83 points followed closely by the Broadway team of Barry Folkes, Louise Folkes, Ben Beacham and Irene Hawkes with 81 points.

The winners will go onto the England Golf Team Championships taking place during Golf Week at Woodhall Spa in August.  We wish them luck !!

Gloucestershire County Golf Partnership held its first (and not its last) Club Team Championships at Cleeve Hill GC - Sunday 26th June.

13 teams took part in an 18-hole am-am playing for the amazing first prize - qualification to the England Golf Club Team Finals at Frilford Heath in August this year.

Scoring was tough on the links course that many had not played before with some holes having just a marker post to show the way.

The winners were the Tewkesbury Park Golf Club Team of Mike and Glo Slatter and Phil and Audrey Payne with 82 points from Lilley Brook Golf Club Team of Martin and Jackie Blain and Eddie and Sue Robinson with 80 points and Minchinhampton New Golf Club Team of David and Sharon Morgan, Simon Mills and Susan Tallett with 79 points.

We were delighted to have Edward Gillespie OBE to present the prizes including the RaceCourse Challenge Bowl to the winners as well as Carole Stratford (President GLCGA) and Ian Watkins (President GGU) to show a truly united Gloucestershire Partnership.

Well done everyone and see you all next year !!
